Though he’s seemingly involved in a death-defying chase sequence aboard the casino planet of Canto Blight in The Last Jedi, John Boyega’s Finn is all set to appear in 2019’s as-yet-untitled Star Wars: Episode IX.
Headed up by Jurassic World director Colin Trevorrow, who re-teams with longtime writing partner Derek Connolly, Episode IX is still incubating in the early, early stages of development – mooted reports have suggested that Trevorrow and Co. will fire up production before the end of 2017, but we’re still awaiting confirmation on that front. That means all of the many actors involved in The Last Jedi and beyond are likely bound to water-tight NDAs with Disney, lest they accidentally reveal any spoiler-sensitive material ahead of time. Remember, Star Wars is held up as a religion in the eyes of many impassioned fans.
Nevertheless, it seems Finn’s presence in Star Wars: Episode IX isn’t so much a spoiler as it is an inevitability, as John Boyega himself revealed during a recent chat with Steele Wars. To his credit, the actor refrained from divulging too much, too soon, and only confirmed that he’s signed on to appear in Colin Trevorrow’s forthcoming sequel – but in what capacity? With two mainline Star Wars movies set to launch between now and Episode IX – namely The Last Jedi and Phil Lord and Chris Miller’s Han Solo anthology film – it’ll be some time yet before we have an answer to that question.
The jury’s still out on the official title, but we do know that Star Wars: Episode IX will be with us on May 24th, 2019. The Last Jedi, on the other hand, is earmarked for launch on December 15th of this year.
