On May 19, Ridley Scott will return to the world he first terrified moviegoers with in the original Alien back in 1979 when his Prometheus follow-up, Alien: Covenant, is unleashed into theatres. The reviews have been mostly positive thus far (if not overwhelmingly so), and the general consensus seems to be that the film works pretty well as both a Prometheus sequel and an Alien prequel. It’s fitting, then, that this latest featurette examines Scott’s role in bringing both to fruition.
The video begins with the original crew of the Nostromo making their fateful trek to investigate the massive craft, where an alien egg with the late John Hurt’s name on it awaits, ready to messily birth the iconic Xenomorph into the annals of cinema history. From there, Alien: Covenant cast members such as Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston and Danny McBride heap praise on their director, before Scott himself explains why he’s so thrilled to return to continue the saga of his “baby.” The featurette concludes with a montage of stunning behind-the scenes shots and gory glimpses of what to expect from the finished product, as the vicious, dome-headed creatures make short work of the Covenant crew.
It remains to be seen if Alien: Covenant can recapture some of the magic of the original and take the box office by storm in the process, but Scott, at least, seems very confident that it will, as he’s already planning to shoot a follow-up “within the next 14 months.” One way or another, we’ll find out if the appetite for this franchise is still there when the flick slithers into theatres in just a few short weeks.
