As most of us know, Yondu is dead, and it looks like he’s gonna stay that way. Despite actor Michael Rooker teasing his return for Infinity War back in February with an Instagram pic taken near Pinewood Studios where the Marvel threequel is being shot, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn has hopped on Twitter to confirm that this was all a ruse to disguise the fact that Yondu wouldn’t be making it out of his film alive:

Though this might be disappointing for some, bringing Yondu back after his noble demise towards the end of GotG Vol. 2 really would cheapen his sacrifice, and only serve to vindicate those that feel that there aren’t really any life or death death stakes in Marvel movies. Plus, he was cremated into ash and blown out the airlock – something tells me even Marvel would have a hard time resurrecting the character after that.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is currently showing in theaters, while Avengers: Infinity War is set for release on May 4th, 2018.
