As with many projects that are part of the DC Extended Universe, what exactly’s going to happen with Suicide Squad 2 is a bit of a mystery to us. Who will direct it? Which characters from the original will reappear? Which new characters will be added in? And, the biggest question of all, when will it arrive?
While we’re still far from finding out a release date for the movie, one of Suicide Squad‘s stars has revealed when they believe the film will go before the cameras. Rick Flag himself, Joel Kinnaman, spoke to The Hollywood Reporter recently and dropped the following tidbit:
“As far as I know they’re writing the script and I think the plan is to shoot it sometime in 2018, but that could change. I think I’ll definitely come back for it.”
Kinnaman’s reply squares with what we know about the movie so far. A few months ago, it was announced that Legend of Tarzan screenwriter Adam Cozad was in talks to write the script. This is the first we’re hearing of production beginning next year, but it does make sense if Warner Bros. are hoping to get it in theatres by 2019.
Further in the interview, the House of Cards star also spoke about who he’d like to see in the director’s chair for the sequel, revealing that he’d love to have Ayer back.
“Ultimately, I’d love for David Ayer to direct it, but if he doesn’t want to direct it then someone who is great with character and that’s able to ground the story and maybe put these characters in a more normal situation. It would be really interesting to see these crazy characters interact with regular people as well.”
Unfortunately for Kinnaman, it seems unlikely that Ayer will return for Suicide Squad 2 as he’ll likely be too busy working on the spinoff Gotham City Sirens, starring Margot Robbie’s Harley Quinn. Directors as diverse as Mel Gibson, Jaume-Collet Serra and Guy Ritchie (who would have been interested, apparently) have all been rumoured to take on the job, but so far, Warner Bros. is yet to settle on someone.
We’ll continue to keep you posted with more about Suicide Squad 2 as and when we hear it, but for now, tell us, who do you want to see get behind the camera for the sequel? Let us know in the usual place.
