Sony’s unveiling of the first extended gameplay for Insomniac’s Spider-Man back in June saved what was an otherwise unremarkable showing for the PlayStation 4 at this year’s E3. Even taking into account that new footage for other exclusives like Naughty Dog’s Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and zombie survivor Days Gone squeezed cheers out of the audience, it was Marvel’s iconic web-slinger that stole the show.
The spandex-clad superhero swinging into view was a definite highlight of not just Sony’s show, but the entirety of E3, and we’ve been eagerly awaiting more details for Peter Parker’s next video game adventure ever since. Thankfully, Insomniac has seemingly heard our prayers, as a newly released featurette gives us just that.
Spider-Man art director Jacinda Chew and creative director Bryan Intihar are on-hand in the video to talk about their experiences with creating a believable world for Parker and his superpowered alter-ego, as well as discussing the story threads Insomniac is tugging on for their own depiction of the people’s hero. While we already know that Wilson Fisk (aka Kingpin) and Mister Negative will be two of Spidey’s main enemies in the title, Insomniac seemingly doesn’t want to fall into the trap of telling a one-dimensional tale of hero vs. villain but rather, a human story that deals with themes of duality.
That’ll include exploring the two markedly different lives of Parker himself – his human, ordinary self, and the one that fights crime on a regular, daily basis. Likewise, his enemy Mr. Negative leads two different lives, one as the supervillain and Spider-Man’s enemy, and the other as Martin Li, the owner of several homeless shelters around New York City. How these two worlds collide will be a focal point of the game, says Intihar.
Besides all of that already juicy info, a few pieces of concept art (including one of Parker’s bedroom), as well as gameplay, are shown off in the video, so do yourselves a favor and give it a watch above.
Spider-Man is out in 2018 for PlayStation 4. Let’s hope Insomniac can steer clear of any and all delays, eh?
