Production is well underway for season 2 of Marvel’s Jessica Jones for Netflix, and as we gear up for the titular Private Investigator’s team-up with The Defenders on August 18th, we’re hearing more about what to expect in the return of her own critically acclaimed series. To that end, executive producer and show creator, Melissa Rosenberg announced the addition of J.R. Ramirez to the regular cast.
Ramirez is a familiar face on the small screen – thanks to roles on Power and Arrow. In the second season of Jessica Jones, he’ll play Oscar – the new superintendent of the superhero’s building, and single father of a young son. While his child quickly bonds with Jessica, fascinated by her powers, Oscar prefers to keep his distance – concerned about the impact her line of work could have on those around her.
Melissa Rosenberg explained her excitement at having cast the actor, saying:
“J.R. is an incredible addition to our cast, bringing complex and subtle emotion and humor. He exudes warmth, edge and intelligence, and blends perfectly with our tone.”
Inevitably, there will be tension between Jessica Jones and Oscar, with suggestions being that he’ll effectively be her love interest for the season. While this would be a standard, unsurprising narrative in any other show, it’s a noteworthy plot direction in Jessica Jones. In the first season – while the hero did romantically tangle with Luke Cage, briefly – Jones was entirely consumed by dealing with the aftermath of her connection with the creepy and abusive Kilgrave (David Tennant). The whole 13 episodes were essentially geared toward her processing and overcoming her trauma.
Kilgrave is now dead, of course, and the calibre of writing on this show dictates that her impending romantic dealings with Oscar will have great significance in terms of her character arc. There’s no official date for the arrival of season 2 of Jessica Jones on Netflix just yet – but we can expect to meet this new Superintendent at some point in 2018.
