The onslaught of Deadpool 2 content continues unabated. If those candid set photos and leaked videos showcasing the Merc With a Mouth speeding through the streets - not to mention Josh Brolin's Cable causing a ruckus - weren't enough for you, then we've got good news, as creator Rob Liefeld has spoken with Comic Book Resources this week to ensure fans that the upcoming sequel will pull heavily from the comics when it comes to the relationship between the titular hero and Brolin's time travelling mutant.

If those candid set photos and leaked videos showcasing the Merc With a Mouth speeding through the streets – not to mention Josh Brolin’s Cable causing a ruckus – weren’t enough for you, then we’ve got good news, as creator Rob Liefeld has spoken with CBR this week to ensure fans that the flick will pull heavily from the comics when it comes to the relationship between the titular hero and Brolin’s time travelling mutant.

But first, some background. Ever since Wade announced in the post-credits scene of Deadpool that Nathan Summers/Cable would be appearing in the sequel, we all geeked out over the news. Later on, our excitement reached boiling point when it was revealed that Josh Brolin would portray the mutant from the future. How can you not be in ecstasy at the thought of Brolin as Cable, people?!

You see, Cable is one of the most badass heroes in Marvel Comics. From his big guns to the even bigger guns on his arms, he’s the Arnold Schwarzenegger of the X-Men universe. You screw with him, and he’ll destroy you without a second thought. He has zero chill and no time for nonsense. And this is what will make his dynamic with Deadpool even more intriguing, since Wade is renowned for his constant B.S.

It’s a dynamic that looks to be an important part of the movie, too, with Liefeld noting the following in that aforementioned interview with CBR:

“Cable has a really interesting and complex backstory. Obviously, no film could ever encapsulate the entire backstory, so I think we’ll find the first introduction is about who this character is. When you look at the Cable and Deadpool comic book series, you see how there is banter between them. Whether they are on opposite sides or not, they are definitely formidable to each other. One is frustrating to the other. The chemistry between Ryan Reynolds and Josh Brolin is amazing. It’s not unlike what you see in the Cable and Deadpool series.”

Deadpool 2 is booked in for release on June 1st, 2018. Last time the Merc With a Mouth stormed theaters, his film managed to rack up an eye-watering $783 million worldwide thanks to its lasting appeal and lean, irreverent script. If David Leitch and Co. are to emulate that success story, they’ll need to pull out all the stops. But thanks to the Domino/Cable double act, we’re quietly confident that the sequel will be able to deliver the goods.
