Josh Brolin Admits He Was Reluctant To Play Cable In Deadpool 2

Soon after Josh Brolin (Avengers: Infinity War) landed the coveted gig of Cable, Deadpool 2 producer Hutch Parker (The Gifted) stressed that the addition of Nathan Summers, a time-traveling mercenary with a no-nonsense attitude to match, will have a profound impact on David Leitch's 2018 sequel.

Soon after Josh Brolin (Avengers: Infinity War) landed the coveted gig of Cable, Deadpool 2 producer Hutch Parker (The Gifted) stressed that the addition of Nathan Summers, a time-traveling mercenary with a no-nonsense attitude to match, will have a profound impact on David Leitch’s 2018 sequel.

Much of that can be traced back to Cable’s ability to traverse through time on a whim, and the fact that Deadpool 2‘s hilarious teaser – coupled with that full-body unveiling of Brolin as the one-eyed rogue – included a Hope Summers Easter egg in plain sight has fueled speculation that the character’s adoptive daughter (AKA the mutant messiah) will factor into the story of Leitch’s follow-up in some shape or form.

The jury’s still out on that one, of course, but in a revealing new interview with Collider, Brolin admitted that he wasn’t always so into the idea of playing the mutant, saying:

“At first I was like, ‘I don’t know. I want to do George and Tammy. My wife – thank god – said to just read it. Why are you even talking, just read it. I was thinking [too big] about the four-picture deal. So, on my phone I remember I read it.”

Continuing on, the actor noted that eventually, the script’s sense of humor hooked him and changed his mind.

“It was so reverent and funny and hysterical that once I got through it I was like, ‘that’s it’ and I had no idea [about] the fan-base. I had no idea what it represented, and I think we’ve made something really special.”

Of course, Cable is just one of two big-name additions to the Deadpool 2 cast, and will join Zazie Beetz’s Domino come 2018. Indeed, the film is also expected to lay the foundations for Drew Goddard’s X-Force ensemble movie, which is just now beginning to coalesce.

Emerging from a troubled spell in production, when stuntwoman Joi “SJ” Harris was tragically killed in an on-set accidentDeadpool 2 has a release date of June 1st, 2018 and given that it’s now headed into post, we imagine some footage may land online in the not too distant future. As always, watch this space for more.
