Are you ready for Jigsaw?
It is, in essence, the eighth entry into Lionsgate’s time-honored Saw franchise, one that’s coming by way of directing duo Michael and Peter Spierig. Best known for their work on Daybreakers, the Spierig siblings are still relatively new when it comes to Hollywood’s horror scene, but when asked to describe how they approached the cult series, Michael Spierig hinted that Jigsaw is “Saw for 2017.” That means it’s safe to expect more nightmare fuel and wildly inventive demented traps than you can shake a pig’s mask at, and though Lionsgate’s franchise has fallen by the wayside in recent years, in 2017, Halloween belongs to Jigsaw. And long may he reign.
Mind you, given that Tobin Bell’s sick, twisted psychopath bit the bullet in Saw III, it looks certain that John Kramer has gathered together a band of disciples to continue that horrifying game from beyond the grave. Eek!
Speaking of which, today we’ve got the very first clip from the film (above) and it sees some unlucky individuals caught in one of the titular killer’s games. We’re not sure of the specifics of this trap, but it’s clear that there will be an ample amount of bloodshed by its end, with a wall of razor sharp saws just waiting to slice open these unwilling contestants.
It’s an intriguing and promising look at the sequel, to be sure, but the one question that’s sparked heated debate still remains, and that’s whether Tobin Bell’s Jigsaw is really serving up a potent dose of nightmare fuel from beyond the grave. It’s all but confirmed that the actor will cameo as the late John Kramer, who was killed off all the way back in Saw III more than ten years ago. But will that take the form of a flashback sequence? Time will tell.
Rounding out the cast list here are Mandela Van Peebles, Brittany Allen, Callum Keith Rennie, Matt Passmore, Hannah Emily Anderson, Josiah Black, Shaquan Lewis, Michael Bolsvert, and James Gomez.
Between Leatherface and Jigsaw – one prequel; one sequel – Lionsgate is plotting double trouble this Halloween, and Michael and Peter Spierig’s nightmarish scare-fest will actually complete the one-two punch when it lights up theaters on October 27th. Leatherface, meanwhile, is set to chronicle the origins of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre on October 20th.
