Prior to the addition of Jeff Goldblum, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom wasn’t exactly jumping off the page as the must-see movie of 2018.
Sure, you have Juan Antonio Bayona and his horror credentials, not to mention the promise of even more genetically modified dinosaurs, but from the outside looking in, Universal’s Jurassic World sequel was shaping up to be your by-the-numbers Hollywood sequel: a bigger, bolder successor with a few new faces (see: Toby Jones, Daniella Pineda, Justice Smith, and Rafe Spall) throw in for good measure.
But that all changed when Jeff Goldblum signed on to reprise as Ian Malcolm, the eccentric mathematician who was last seen in The Lost World: Jurassic Park more than 20 years ago. The finer details of Malcolm’s second coming are being kept under lock and key (and rightly so!), but while promoting his role as Marvel’s Grandmaster in Thor: Ragnarok, Jeff Goldblum teased his involvement in Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom in the most Goldblum way imaginable.
Ian Malcolm, yes, might be back in this one, and he might have something to say about the current confluence of circumstances around the use and misuse of technology. With some wry irony, deep wise passionate conviction, and he might put on a nice dark bit of clothing here and there … and a tint of glass maybe.
But what has kept Ian Malcolm so busy for the past 20 years? Well, Goldblum has an idea, and let’s just hope it finds its way into the script.
Per Radio Times:
What’s he been in the meantime? He opened a jazz club, probably, and he’s been playing every Wednesday in a place called Rockwell. He calls it Rockwell.
Juan Antonio Bayona and his team will welcome moviegoers into a Fallen Kingdom when Universal’s Jurassic World sequel stomps into theaters on June 22nd, 2018. Last we reported, we learned that the sequel’s first trailer was primed to release alongside The Last Jedi in December. Stay tuned for more.
