The Marvel Cinematic Universe has an awful lot going for it, but one thing it’s notably lacking is female-led superhero movies. Sure, we’ve got Captain Marvel due in 2019, but that’ll make it an astonishing eleven years of Marvel Studios’ films that have had male protagonists.
What’s worse is that they’ve got Scarlett Johansson’s Black Widow right there, practically begging for a solo outing. Adrianne Palicki clearly agrees, too, and desperately wants to get her Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. character Mockingbird involved.
In fact, the subject came up during a recent Reddit AMA, when Palicki was asked whether she’d consider teaming up with Johansson’s Black Widow. Her response was, to say the least, enthusiastic:
“I would LOVE to get to kick ass next to Black Widow! Bad-ass chics unite!! Waiting for the call!”
Sadly, I think Palicki is going to be waiting a while. If Marvel were ever going to make a Black Widow solo movie, they’d have done so by now, or at minimum made some noises about putting one into production. Instead, we’ve had to make do with the morsels of her backstory parceled out over various Avengers, Iron Man and Captain America pics, where she’s constantly relegated to supporting player.
A slightly bigger fly in the ointment is that, right now, Palicki’s character has taken a break from being a S.H.I.E.L.D. superspy and is as yet unconfirmed for season 5 of the show. But you just can’t keep a good super-badass agent down, with Palicki mentioning that she’d be open to doing at least a cameo in the upcoming season. In the meantime, though, she’ll be busy with the second outing of Fox’s sci-fi hit, The Orville, which surprised audiences by actually being pretty fun.
Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 5 premieres on December 1st on ABC, while The Orville is airing on Thursday nights on FOX.
