The first crossover between The Walking Dead and its sister show Fear The Walking Dead is now on the horizon, with Lennie James’ Morgan Jones recently revealed to be the character set to leave the parent series and join the cast of the spinoff. It’s an announcement that has proven bittersweet for fans, who are simultaneously excited for the crossover and sad to see Morgan exit TWD.
Someone else who’s already missing Morgan is Rick Grimes himself, Andrew Lincoln. As the leading man of the zombie drama, the actor has had to say goodbye to many cast members over the years, and James’ upcoming exit is hitting him hard as he really enjoys exploring Rick and Morgan’s relationship.
“This job is, as I’ve said before, glorious, wouldn’t trade it for the world, but there is a stinger. There’s the fact that, I seem to be the guy left on the pier waving people away. That’s hard, particularly when it’s someone, like Morgan and Rick’s relationship is beautiful in this story. It began with that man saving Rick’s life, continued in saving his back, then they’re almost like Gemini twins. They share the same history, common history, in finding each other, losing a wife…”
On the plus side, though, Morgan has disappeared from The Walking Dead for long stretches before and has always returned to the show. Due to this, Lincoln remains optimistic that Rick will encounter his old friend again at some point. He added:
“I think that they have an intense habit of finding each other, no matter what channel they’re on.”
Of course, we don’t yet know what form the crossover will take. It’s possible that Morgan’s appearance on Fear the Walking Dead will be set in the past, filling in the gaps of one of his absences from TWD. This option would support the popular fan theory that the character isn’t going to make it out of season 8 alive. If that’s the case, though, then why does Lincoln think that Morgan could still appear on the show?
I guess we’ll just have to keep watching The Walking Dead to find out. Speaking of which, the midseason finale, “How It’s Gotta Go,” airs this Sunday, December 10th.
