Star Wars: The Last Jedi Is About To Become One Of The Biggest Films Of All-Time

The Last Jedi is well on its way to box office royalty, if it isn't there already. At the time of writing, Rian Johnson's Star Wars sequel is the 12th highest-grossing film of all time at $1.22 billion, placing it just in front of Iron Man 3 ($1.21 billion) and Minions ($1.15 billion). Not bad for a movie that hasn't even been out for a month yet, eh?

At the time of writing, Rian Johnson’s Star Wars sequel is the 12th highest-grossing film of all time at $1.22 billion, placing it just in front of Iron Man 3 ($1.21 billion) and Minions ($1.15 billion). Not bad for a movie that hasn’t even been out for a month yet, eh?

That being said, it’ll still fall short of The Force Awakens, after box office forecasts predicted a final cume in the region of $1.6 billion, whereas J.J. Abrams’ franchise revival brought in a staggering $2.06 billion back in 2015. Granted, Episode VII held the distinction of being the first Star Wars movie in almost a decade, which no doubt helped skyrocket it to that gigantic haul.

Now, the question is, how much higher will The Last Jedi climb? Well, at this point, there’s still no real competition for the rest of the month, but the latest chapter in the Skywalker saga is certainly slowing down. If it does hit that $1.6 billion mark though, as predicted, that’ll place it as the 5th highest-grossing film of all time, just edging out The Avengers ($1.51 billion) – a finish that the folks at Lucasfilm would surely be thrilled with.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi initially touched down in theaters on December 15th, and ever since, Rian Johnson’s blockbuster has blown past one box office milestone after another. It’s by no means the perfect sequel, after a portion of the Star Wars community (and Mark Hamill) initially took issue with Johnson’s creative vision, but all in all, The Last Jedi has been a resounding success and has us very excited to see what comes next.
