Avatar‘s Stephen Lang is game to play Nick Fury – but not as you know him.
Screen Rant caught up with the actor to touch base on Don’t Breathe 2 and the future of James Cameron’s fledgling sci-fi saga, which finally continues in the form of Avatar 2 in 2020.
On the superhero front, barring his online campaign to play Cable in Deadpool 2 – a role that would ultimately fall into the hands of Josh Brolin (Avengers: Infinity War) – Lang has yet to make his debut in Hollywood’s hottest genre, though if the stars align, he’d like to play the role of Nick Fury as he leads the Howling Commandos to victory in WWII.
Citing Sgt. Fury and his Howling Commandos as his all-time favorite comic book, here’s what the actor had to share:
My favorite Comic Book of all the Marvel series, was always Sargent Fury and His Howling Commandos. I friggin’ loved Sargent Fury’s Howling Commandos and to me it was always like, I want to be Nick Fury.
Initially released in 2005, Nick Fury’s Howling Commandos was a six-issue comic series that placed Nick Fury in control of an elite World War II unit. It’s never mentioned in the Marvel Cinematic Universe though, so we can’t imagine a scenario in which the Powers That Be suddenly deem Howling Commandos to be canon.
Still, Black Widow has been given the keys to her own MCU movie, so perhaps there’s a chance for a Nick Fury spinoff, too – even if it winds up featuring someone other than Lang.
Marvel’s Nick Fury – SLJ, not Lang – may not feature in Avengers: Infinity War, but the character is said to be a shoo-in for Captain Marvel, which will whisk viewers back to the 1990s when it hits theaters in 2019.
