Kate Beckinsale returns to the Underworld franchise in 2012 with Underwold: Awakening. The fourth film in the vampire/lycan franchise returns Kate Beckinsale to the popular role of vampire warrior Selene for the first time since 2006’s Underworld Evolution.

Details on the film’s plot have now surfaced and they raise some interesting questions from Underworld fans. Screenrant reports that Kate Beckinsale’s Selene wakes up 15 years in the future. Imprisoned in some kind of cryogenic freeze after having been captured by a human biotech company waging war on vampires and lycans, Selene escapes and finds herself in the midst of a war that pits humans versus the creatures of the night.

The main question raised by the plot description is what happened to Selene’s lycan loverboy Michael; played by Scott Speedman. The film’s first teaser trailer, released last week, has Selene demanding to know where Michael is. IMBD meanwhile, has Scott Speedman rumored for Underworld: Awakening.

Joining Kate Beckinsale in Underworld: Awakening is India Eisley as Eve, Selene and Michael’s teenage daughter. Best known for her role on the ABC Family series The Secret Life of the American Teenager, Eisley as Eve was one of the first images released from Underworld: Awakening back in April.

Also joining the cast is Michael Ealy as a human detective who begins working with Selene against the film’s evil corporation. Charles Dance plays one of the elder vampires and Stephen Rea, from the teaser trailer looks to be the big bad corporate bad guy.

Len Wiseman, director of the first two Underworld movies, wrote the screenplay for Underworld: Awakening but it is the Swedish directing duo, Mans Marlind and Bjorn Stein, at the helm.

Underworld: Awakening has been shot in 3D and will be released nationwide on January 20th, 2012.
