Diana Prince of Themysicra is no match for Earth’s Mightiest Heroes.
The latest box office numbers have been counted and, yes, Avengers: Infinity War is still a force to be reckoned with – so much so, in fact, that analysts expect the Marvel epic to break $1 billion by tomorrow, May 4th. Just in time for its second weekend.
It’s certainly possible, as Infinity War‘s current $857 million total places it ahead of fellow MCU title Thor: Ragnarok ($854M) after just seven days. Warner Bros. powerhouse Wonder Woman ($822M) was also no match for the Herculean event movie, which ostensibly matched Justice League‘s domestic total after only three days.
Of that $857 million gross, Avengers: Infinity War has amassed $322M in North America, leaving many to wonder whether Joe and Anthony Russo’s superhero smackdown has what it takes to emulate Black Panther, the reigning king, at $681M. Our guess? Providing the MCU blockbuster maintains a steady pace over the next weeks, it’s really a question of when Infinity War will supplant T’Challa’s standalone movie, rather than if.
On a global scale, Infinity War is still a ways away from topping The Avengers ($1.5 billion), Marvel’s first landmark crossover that assembled Earth’s Mightiest Heroes back in 2012. Mind you, at $857M, it’s already halfway there, and Avengers 3 still has an ace in the hole: China.
As we reported earlier this week, Marvel’s 2018 event movie isn’t expected to reach the Middle Kingdom until next Friday, May 11th – for the record, Russia will open its doors to Avengers: Infinity War this coming weekend – so there’s every chance Chinese audiences will help propel the MCU title towards box office greatness. And $2 billion, perhaps? Time will tell.
