Recently, the Russo brothers revealed that, relatively speaking, there isn’t a huge amount of deleted material out there for Avengers: Infinity War. As the longest entry in the MCU to date at just shy of 2 hours and 30 minutes, the directors managed to squeeze in just about everything they wanted into the runtime. However, there was one particular scene they were sad to let go of – a comedic moment involving the Guardians of the Galaxy.
When they first mentioned this, the Russos didn’t dish on the details, but in a new interview with ComicBook.com, the pair have come clean about what the scene consisted of and where it came within the narrative. Anthony Russo revealed that it continued on from when Gamora had been kidnapped by Thanos on Knowhere, leaving Star-Lord and his allies at a loss at how to proceed.
“Because we have such a great relationship and we go through such a thorough process with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely, we generally are pretty tight in terms of what the movie is. We do have a few scenes. One of the most substantial ones is a scene we really loved. It’s a scene between the Guardians, between Pratt, Drax, and Mantis.”
“And it’s at that moment in the movie where they have lost Gamora to Thanos in the Knowhere and they don’t know what to do about it. They don’t know where to go. They have no idea what to do. And it serves as this very absurd scene about the Guardians not knowing what to do, that’s very, very funny. And even though we loved the scene, the movie just wasn’t asking for it at that moment.”
The director went on to further elaborate on why the scene, though they liked it so much, had to be removed from the final cut of the movie. In short, it just hindered the overall relentless pace of the story.
“It’s such a complex movie, there’s so much going on, we just needed to keep things pushing. Driving harder at that moment in the show. And for that and other reasons we just ended up taking it and the movie played better without it.”
This does sound like a worthwhile, fun sequence, as you can never have too much of the Guardians doing their thing. However, the team got a solid chunk of the yuks in Avengers: Infinity War, so it’s not like this moment robs off us of something the movie desperately needed. That said, we look forward to seeing it when it invariably features on the Blu-ray/DVD release.
