Given that Avengers: Infinity War might be the talk of the town right now, and understandably so considering the numbers it’s been putting up at the box office, the legend of The Dark Knight has somewhat flickered out of relevance. At least, for the moment.
While the film may have been snubbed in the Best Picture category at the 81st Academy Awards, leaving the public in an uproar, it did go on to earn eight Oscar nominations in 2008, winning Best Sound Editing and Best Supporting Actor, awarded to the late Heath Ledger for his portrayal of Bruce Wayne’s archenemy, the Joker.
We may be 10 years out from his iconic performance, but Ledger’s turn as the Clown Prince of Crime still remains an acting benchmark. Not just for superhero movies, either, but for cinema in general. And though he may be gone from this world, his legacy continues to live on, as evidenced by this new BTS image of the legendary actor, which shows the Joker and his goons on the set of The Dark Knight.

Though not terribly revealing or anything, this photo is still a nice glimpse into one of the most beloved and celebrated performances of all-time. Make no mistake about it, if there’s one small solace to take away from Heath Ledger’s all-too-brief time on this Earth, it’s that he saved his best work for last. After all, just as Carrie Fisher was and forever will be Princess Leia, Heath Ledger will always be the Clown Prince of Crime.
In The Dark Knight, the late, great actor delivered a tour-de-force performance that transcended the silver screen to become something more – something immortal. And that’s exactly what he achieved with his pitch-perfect Batman role, even if he didn’t know it at the time.
