Jake Gyllenhaal is within arm’s reach of his first major comic book role. And we couldn’t be more excited.
News broke earlier this week that Gyllenhaal, star of Stronger, Nightcrawler and The Day After Tomorrow, has come into contention to headline Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 as Quentin Beck (AKA Mysterio), where he will presumably star opposite the returning Michael Keaton (Adrian Toomes/The Vulture).
Marvel Studios is yet to announce anything official, so it’d be foolish to rush to conclusions. Still, the mere fact that Jake Gyllenhaal is negotiating for the role is exciting in and of itself – not least because he jumped to the tip-top of Marvel’s wishlist after Ryan Gosling (!) bowed out of the race for Mysterio.
And in order to give budding fans a taste of what’s to come, esteemed concept artist BossLogic has shared his latest piece – an incredible slice of fan art that imagines Jake Gyllenhaal as the villain of Spider-Man: Homecoming 2. Feast thy eyes:
Dubbed one of Peter Parker’s deadliest foes, Mysterio is a gifted, albeit underappreciated special effects guru who yearns to become a bona fide supervillain, and dreams up all sorts of illusions and tricks to counter Spidey’s abilities.
BossLogic is certainly excited for Quentin Beck to light up the big screen, even if he thinks there may be someone better suited for the role…
“Wanted to make a quick one today for the post – Mysterio,” said the digital artist. “Personally, I’m still not too sure on this role for him, he is a dope actor and would love to see Jake in a role he could dive deep into. That being said, if they do the character justice writing wise then I’m all for it.He has been in Bubble Boy, Life both in which he is cased in a sphere. Never judge ’till I see it myself.”
But what do you think? Will Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 place Gyllenhaal in the fishbowl? Or do you expect another actor to tackle Mysterio before Peter Parker caps off his solo trilogy by confronting Kraven the Hunter? Do let us know.
