To say that Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 has been placed on the back-burner for the moment may read as something of an understatement. After all, Marvel still has Ant-Man and the Wasp, Avengers 4 and Captain Marvel to contend with, and Peter Parker’s second solo outing isn’t due to arrive until July of 2019.
Nevertheless, director Jon Watts is already hard at work putting together his Homecoming follow-up and though plot details remain scarce – aside from some leaks here and there – we’re slowly but surely starting to learn a little more about what to expect.
For one, the pic will herald Jake Gyllenhaal’s first major comic book movie role, as the A-list Hollywood star has agreed to take on the part of Quentin Beck (AKA Mysterio) for the 2019 sequel, in which he’ll leverage villain duties with the returning Adrian Toomes/Vulture. Suffice it to say, Spidey is up against it.
But beyond that, we’re now also hearing that the official title for the film may be Spider-Man: Field Trip. This nugget of information comes to us from Reddit of all places, so take it with the usual grain of salt, but we should note that this isn’t the first time the moniker has cropped up.
Marvel hasn’t commented on the matter just yet, but Field Trip would certainly align nicely with what we’ve heard about the sequel being a globetrotting affair. Just the other month, in fact, producer Kevin Feige confirmed as much, saying:
“We start filming early July. We film in London. We shot first film in Atlanta. And we shoot a lot of films in London but there’s another reason we’re shooting in London which is, yes, Spidey, of course, will spend some time in New York, but he’ll spend some time in other parts of the globe.
The way Civil War and the fact that he went to Leipzig Airport and then has to go back to school, informed Homecoming, the two Avengers films that precede [the sequel] will greatly inform, probably even more so, the next movie.”
Also of note, Jon Watts’ blockbuster sequel will be the first MCU pic to succeed Avengers 4 and, by effect, establish the parameters of Phase 4, so it’d be foolish to dismiss Homecoming 2 as just another Marvel sequel.
Fresh from his battle with the Mad Titan, look for Tom Holland’s Avenger to butt heads with Vulture and Mysterio when Spider-Man: Homecoming 2 – or Spider-Man: Field Trip – swings into theaters on July 5th, 2019. Next up for Marvel Studios though is the launch of another MCU sequel: Ant-Man and the Wasp.
