Nearly a decade removed from the release of Zombieland, and we should probably start gearing up for a journey back to Pacific Playland.
Although the idea of a sequel to the moderately successful post-apocalyptic comedy has been intermittently convulsing this year, what with co-screenwriter Paul Wernick providing a status update on a possible follow-up, and the other scribe, Rhett Reese, acknowledging an inescapable time jump, we’ve just been handed something a lot more concrete.
According to Splash Report, an unnamed, yet reliable source tipped-off the site to a test screening happening tomorrow in Southern California. What of it? Well, it looks to be regarding an advance showing of Zombieland 2, subtitled Double Tap. I know, it’s hard to believe, but you can check out the invite below for yourself.
Given that Wernick stated he was “sitting on information” that he couldn’t “share at this moment” last month, I suppose it’s plausible that Sony shot the picture in secret, but it’s best not to be presumptive in situations like these. Nevertheless, the title does make sense, seeing as Rule #2 is “double tap;” denoting that the walking dead should be shot twice to ensure expiry.
However, Wernick also disclosed in the same interview with Vulture that hopefully “we’re shooting that thing [Zombieland 2] early 2019 for an October of ’19 release.” So, while I don’t mean to be a pessimist, seeing as we don’t have all the information just yet, abstaining from elation is probably the most logical course of action here.
On the other hand, Reese and Wernick took no issue in teasing fans of their horror comedy last month, stating that those “who’ve been hoping for a Zombieland 2,” will have their wish granted “very, very soon,” leading me to believe that, at the very least, we should be receiving confirmation on a sequel at some point in the near future.
