Don’t expect Arthur Curry to be limited by underwater air pockets come December.
In anticipation of his solo Aquaman movie, director James Wan spoke to Entertainment Weekly about all things Atlantis, before admitting that people are guilty of “overthinking” the inevitable dialogue scenes that take place beneath the waves.
So whereas Jason Momoa’s King of the Seven was forced to communicate via giant air pockets in Zack Snyder’s Justice League – ditto for Amber Heard’s Mera – the superpowered duo will talk normally, just as they would on dry land. If that sounds pretty obvious, it should; or so says James Wan, who believes everyone is overthinking the entire situation:
People are overthinking it. They’re just gonna talk!
Let’s hope that’s the case, as the King of Atlantis was also subject to a pretty shoddy cameo in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, one which took place underwater, too.
Thank the heavens, then, that James Wan has embraced Aquaman’s rich world with arms wide open, and the director has since admitted that the challenging underwater shots were part of what drew him to the project in the first place. And at least based on knee-jerk reactions, Wan has delivered a worthy solo movie for Arthur Curry. That being said, most of this praise can be traced back to studio executives – like Warner Bros. film chief Toby Emmerich, for instance – and should therefore be treated with heightened caution.
Still, Emmerich has nothing but praise for James Wan’s achievement:
James has done an incredible job with his team. The film is taking you to a different place and imagining the underwater world in a way you haven’t seen before.
Aquaman officially makes land on December 21st.
