While the fatality heavy final third of Star Wars: The Last Jedi wasn’t quite the genocidal dustbath that Avengers: Infinity War brought us a few months later, the former arguably surpasses the latter in terms of its concluding cliffhanger’s ability to have audiences nervously asking, “What now?” In other words, Star Wars: Episode IX has been left in a pretty difficult position when it comes to deciding where the story can and should go from here.
With production yet to begin on the trilogy-closing sequel, fans will be clutching at whatever rumors and hearsay they can find on how exactly J.J. Abrams plans to meet the bar raised by Rian Johnson’s cinematic masterpiece or repair the damage done by his cinematic atrocity, depending on who you ask.
The latest bit of alleged information concerns a rumored scene between Poe Dameron and Finn, two characters whose introductions to the Star Wars saga in The Force Awakens seem inherently intertwined, but who haven’t shared a whole lot of screen time since. The current talk is that the pair will feature in a major set piece in the next movie that possibly takes place in a bar of some sorts, and that a leaked casting call asking for ‘stern-faced’ extras to work throughout the month of August is seeking out the necessary crowd for this sequence – which is said to be very important to the film.
If all this does indeed turn out to be true, then perhaps what we’re looking at is a callback to the Mos Eisley Cantina scenes in A New Hope. And if we really want to risk jumping the gun, this could even be the same scene featured in a rumor last month about a sequence involving Finn, Poe, Rose and the Hutt Cartel.
The yet-to-be-titled Star Wars: Episode IX is set to begin production later this month, which hopefully means that some solid information on the upcoming film will follow shortly – but failing that, we should at least get a few interesting set pics. In any case, look for it to blast into theaters and conclude this divisive trilogy on December 20th, 2019.
