For the past 10 years, the studio exec and his close-knit team have orchestrated a cinematic vision the likes of which we’ve never seen before, and it’s a testimony to the MCU’s staying power that, even after 18 movies, new releases in the vein of Avengers: Infinity War and Ant-Man and the Wasp are still able to pull in the big bucks.

But the common perception that Marvel’s leading creators huddled together to form one overarching endgame is simply not true; if anything, only Kevin Feige knows where the MCU is headed in Phase 4… and beyond.

Here’s what former MCU director James Gunn had to say about how the fate of Marvel’s cinematic juggernaut ultimately rests in the hands of Feige and that the filmmakers are mostly kept in the dark.

There’s a belief out there that somehow, over the past however many years, we sat in a room and we came up with this long big story that leads to this one thing, and it’s just not the way it is.

Those comments were made during Marvel’s 10-year anniversary directors roundtable, which brought together the likes of Jon Favreau, Joss Whedon and even Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), who attended the meeting by way of Skype and a well-placed Hawaiian shirt. It’s a fascinating deep dive into the goings-on behind the scenes at Marvel Studios, and how Kevin Feige is still able to keep the MCU on course all the while offering each director some semblance of creative freedom.

The roundtable itself is exclusive to the Avengers: Infinity War digital release, which hit the interwebs on Tuesday. And in keeping with tradition, the film’s Blu-ray release has been scheduled for two weeks’ time.
