Avengers: Infinity War left us with a lot of loose ends, many of which won’t get resolved until next year’s sequel, but on the audio commentary track for the film’s new home video release, the creative team behind the Marvel mega hit may have teased the answer to the most pressing question of them all: What happened to Korg? And frankly, we’re a little worried.
For those unaware, Korg is the lovable rock person voiced by director Taika Waititi in last year’s Thor: Ragnarok. This noble warrior was a friend to the God of Thunder and helped stage a revolution on the planet Sakaar, before joining Chris Hemsworth’s hero in the fight against Hela. By the end of the movie, Korg, Thor, their friend Valkyrie and the remaining Asgardians are left journeying through space in search of a new home, but alas, it was not meant to be.
Before Infinity War’s first scene had even kicked off, the ship was attacked by Thanos and his cronies, killing much of the crew and eventually blowing their transport up. In the film’s audio commentary, co-writer Stephen McFeely provides some consolation when he assures viewers, “I think we should say that several Asgardians have escaped.”
Indeed, as Joe Russo points out, we already know of at least one popular character who’s lived to see another day. “Several Asgardians have escaped,” the Infinity War co-director notes. “I have gone on record saying Valkyrie has escaped with some of the Asgardians.”
So, you might say that things aren’t looking so bad after all. But then after this glimmer of hope is offered, co-writer Christopher Markus delivers a concerning message: “All I can say is pray for Korg.”
While this isn’t exactly a confirmation of death, things don’t sound too good for the soft-spoken gladiator, either. The next time someone tries to tell you that Thanos did nothing wrong, just remind them of our dear friend Korg, whose fate still hangs in the balance.
The Mad Titan may have finally gone too far this time, but if you’d still like to revisit his murderous quest for the Infinity Stones, Avengers: Infinity War is on Digital HD and coming to 4K Ultra HD, Blu-Ray and DVD on August 14th.
