Supernatural Could Still Get A Spinoff, Even If Wayward Sisters Didn’t Pan Out

As wildly popular and successful as Supernatural has proven to be (it's been renewed for a fourteenth season, after all), the seemingly immortal horror series yet to produce as spinoff that's made it beyond the backdoor pilot stage. So far, both "Bloodlines" and "Wayward Sisters" failed to gain enough traction with the fanbase as to allow for an offshoot, even if I assumed the latter was pretty much a lock.

So, even with two strikes against those making up the hunting community not bearing the names Sam or Dean Winchester, there’s still a chance someone could hit a home run at some point. In fact, CW president Mark Pedowitz said that “if the executive producers want to do one, we’re open to listening to one,” when asked by Deadline if a spinoff was still in the cards at the Television Critics Association summer press tour.

Right now, the explanation we’ve been given for Jody Mills and the rest of the girls not being granted their own headlining gig is that “we had a certain number of spots this year, so it just didn’t get there.” That said, I imagine the pilot episodes for All-American, Charmed and Legacies impressed the suits more.

Speaking of Legacies, it’s the latest series to be spawned from The Vampire Diaries‘ universe, following in the footsteps of The Originals. Only in that case, it comes after both its ancestors concluded their respective runs. Similarly, something could happen for Supernatural, but Pedowitz is “concerned” that “there may not be a franchise beyond that.”

Of course, the Winchesters probably still have several years to go before they hang up their plaid shirts for good, so that gives the Powers The Be plenty of time to cook up another spinoff idea. But whether or not any sort of followup can endure for such an impressive duration remains to be seen.

Supernatural returns for its fourteenth season on Thursday, October 11 on The CW.
