It’s been well over a year since the first critically, and financially successful DCEU film graced the screen at your local multiplex, and Wonder Woman is still causing quite a stir in the realm of superhero cinema.
However, grossing $412 million at the domestic box office and well over $800 million worldwide still pales in comparison to the amount of “women, young and old” who finally saw an image of themselves reflected in a superhero on the big screen.” At least, that’s according to a petition currently circling the interweb.
In case you missed the memo, following the release of Wonder Woman, a petition was launched on Change.org in which people can call upon WB for the bisexual orientation of Diana of Themyscira to be presented on the silver screen. Started some eleven months ago by Gianna Collier-Pitts of GLAAD, the goal of said document is to achieve 15,000 signatures, and as of today, the appeal’s closing in on the targeted figure, with a little over 11,000 signees.
For those of you who don’t know, Diana Prince has widely been alluded to as bisexual in the comic book medium, and writer of Wonder Woman: Rebirth, Greg Rucka, has even gone on the record saying: “Diana has been in love and had relationships with other women.” After all, she does hail from Themyscira, a land inhabited exclusively by women, something which “alone should serve as reason enough to confirm her sexuality.”
Ultimately, whether or not DC and WB will act per the petition does, unfortunately, remain to be seen. That said, given the direction of superhero cinema, it wouldn’t be entirely surprising if the comic book titan decided to make Diana of Themyscira bisexual in her sequel, Wonder Woman 1984. Or, at the very least, allude to it in some way.
What do you think, though? Would you like to see Diana portrayed this way in the 2019 blockbuster? As always, you can make yourself heard down below.
