After two wildly successful blockbusters in the space of four years, Ryan Reynolds and Wade Wilson are practically one and the same – in the humor department, at least.
Without Reynolds’ zippy one-liners and razor-sharp wit, for instance, the live-action Deadpool movies would cease to exist, as one could argue that there’s no one more suited to the role of a fast-talking jokester than Ryan Reynolds.
Case in point: his original pitch for Deadpool 2, which was revealed during the actor’s appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon (h/t Heroic Hollywood). We’ll give you a clue: it involves the Merc sneaking into The Voice HQ and stealing one of those fancy revolving chairs…
My first pitch to the studio was not met very well. I pitched them that for the sequel, the whole story of the movie would be Deadpool trying to steal the big, red chair from The Voice. And they were like ‘That’s just the dumbest thing ever.’ But the second one, it was great because it was always fun to pitch to the studio.
Needless to say, Ryan Reynolds is fooling around, as Deadpool 2‘s lead star also helped fine-tune the script from Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. So even if he put forward a suggestion to Fox executives of the Merc getting his grubby hands on the “big red chair from The Voice,” he was likely just pulling their leg, before settling in to draft the real Deadpool 2 screenplay involving Cable, Domino and the fire-wielding mutant known as Russell.
All of those characters are expected to return at some point in the future (X-Force, perhaps), though as the Disney-Fox merger begins to loom, it’s unclear as yet whether their respective release dates will be affected. Stay tuned for more on that.
