Star Wars Resistance is the latest animated series to come from the mind of The Clone Wars and Rebels showrunner Dave Filoni. As the title suggests, it’s set prior to the events of The Force Awakens and will follow the Resistance in their fight against the First Order. Though we won’t see the likes of Rey or Finn, fan favorites such as Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron and Gwendoline Christie’s Captain Phasma will return instead.
Not only that, but it seems a bonafide legend of the Star Wars saga will appear as well. Entertainment Weekly’s Anthony Breznican broke the news on Twitter that the one and only General Leia Organa “will be a character” in Resistance, revealing that voice actress Rachel Butera will be stepping into the role made famous by the late, great Carrie Fisher.
It’s unsure what “be a character” entails exactly. For instance, will Leia show up in a one-off cameo appearance, or be a recurring presence on the show? Presumably, it’s the latter, as Leia’s position as a leader of the Resistance would surely make her hard to avoid in a series that’s all about the successor to the Rebel Alliance. Fans have been fascinated by how
TFA dropped Leia in a very different place from where we last saw her, too, so it’s exciting to hear that more of the character in her General phase will be explored.
As you surely saw, the first trailer for Star Wars Resistance landed earlier today and promised a much brighter show than Rebels with a new animation style. From what we understand, it’ll see Poe recruit excitable newbie and aspiring pilot Kazuda “Kaz” Xiono as a spy for the Resistance, as teased in the synopsis that was released a few weeks ago, and you can look for it to premiere on Disney XD on October 7th.
