Bloody Disgusting has the scoop, revealing that The Texas Chainsaw Massacre series is on the verge of receiving a new lease of life, as Legendary is one of several studios in the mix to acquire the legendary horror IP.

Today’s report stresses that a new line of Texas Chainsaw movies (and a TV series, perhaps?) is practically inevitable at this point – it’s really a question of whether Legendary wants to get in on the slasher fun. And having delivered the Michael Dougherty duo of Trick ‘r Treat and Krampus, before appointing the director at the helm of Godzilla: King of the Monsters, Legendary has the necessary pulling power to inject serious talent into a horror franchise in dire need of a fresh start.

Because let’s face it, both Texas Chainsaw 3D and Leatherface left much to be desired…

And here’s something to sweeten the deal – per Bloody Disgusting, it’s understood Legendary is very close to renewing its distribution deal with Warner Bros. which may, through time, allow A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre to all exist under the one roof… pending legal issues, of course.

Will this ultimately lead to a shared universe featuring three of the most iconic slasher villains in film history? It’s possible, but even our inner optimists are somewhat skeptical about such an ambitious crossover event involving three franchises that haven’t exactly been at the top of their games in recent years.

This is also assuming that Legendary becomes the new home of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, so it’s fair to say there are many more hurdles to overcome before that pipe dream turns into a reality.
