By all accounts, Star Trek: Discovery got off to a strong start with its debut season, honoring the legacy of past Trek shows while also blazing its own path with former Walking Dead star Sonequa Martin-Green taking the lead as Michael Burnham.
So, it’s fair to say that there’s a lot of excitement lingering over season 2, which is expected to premiere by way of CBS All Access during the early stages of 2019. In fact, that was confirmed earlier today when the network dropped the first poster to promote the new run. Seen in the gallery down below, it doesn’t show off very much, but it does tell us that Discovery will be back on our screens this January.
As for what else we can expect, well, we know that the show plans to dig deeper into the wider Trek universe in its second season. Inhumans‘ Anson Mount is hopping aboard as the new captain, Christopher Pike, Rebecca Romijn is his first mate Number One and, perhaps most exciting of all, Ethan Peck has joined the cast as Spock, the third actor to play the role of the iconic Vulcan.
Furthermore, it’s said that this next run of Discovery will be inspired by “The Cage,” which was the pilot of The Original Series. Beyond that though, season 2 is also said to have much more of a lighter tone to it than the rookie outing, while also feeling more like classic Trek, which should please those who felt like the first season was a drastic departure.
Overall, Star Trek: Discovery season 2 appears to be taking the show in a more fan-pleasing direction and we can’t wait to see what else is in store for us when it returns to CBS All Access in January 2019. We imagine the promotional campaign will begin to ramp up now, too, as we inch closer and closer to the new year, and as soon as the network brings us more, we’ll be sure to let you know.
