James Cameron is officially signed on to make Avatar 2 & 3, and is considering shooting them in one continuous shoot.
Fox Entertainment made the announcement Wednesday morning, saying Cameron “will begin work on the scripts early next year with an eye towards commencing production later in 2011.”
They went on to say Avatar 2 is currently slated for a December 2014 release, and Avatar 3 will come out one year later in December 2015. The two sequels “will be self-contained stories that also fulfill a greater story arc,” Cameron said in a statement.
“I’m looking forward to returning to Pandora, a world where our imaginations can run wild.”
It is expected that today’s announcement will put on hold Cleopatra: A Life, which Cameron had previously considered directing. The film was slated to be in 3D and starring Angelina Jolie.
The first Avatar, which was released last December, is the highest-grossing film of all time at 2.8 billion worldwide. Of course that number is greatly influenced by hefty 3D prices.
