Star Trek Writer Says Captain Picard’s The Hero We Need Right Now

Star Trek writer Michael Chabon spoke to CNET in a recent interview and said that Captain Picard is the hero we need right now.

Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Star Trek are two things that practically go hand in hand, but no one could’ve imagined that we’d be lucky enough to have them together again.

Nevertheless, for the first time since 2002’s disappointing Star Trek: NemesisPatrick Stewart’s Picard is making a comeback in what’s probably the best Trek news we’ve heard since Quentin Tarantino began pursuing his own R-rated spin on the classic sci-fi franchise.

Of course, such a thing was never a certainty, but it’s definitely happening and it seems to be the perfect time for Stewart to make his return, too. At least, according to Michael Chabon it is. The writer’s involved in the upcoming Picard show and while speaking to CNET in a recent interview, he said that the Captain’s the hero the world needs right now.

“Captain Picard is the hero we need right now. He exemplifies in some ways even more than James Kirk — and I’m not gonna get into the Kirk vs Picard argument because I love Captain Kirk, he was my first captain — but Picard is even more of an exemplar of everything that is best about Star Trek’s vision for the future.

“… And he wasn’t such a hound dog as Captain Kirk.”

Unfortunately, Chabon wouldn’t drop any hints as to what the show will actually be about, but with any luck, we’ll have a better indication of what’s to come pretty soon. These are bright times for Star Trek fans, after all, and Captain Jean-Luc Picard’s imminent return to our screens is just the glistening cherry atop a deliciously starship-shaped cake.

Until it flies into view, though, Trekkies can at least take comfort in the fact that Discovery will be back for its second season in January, and with the show adding classic characters like Spock and Captain Pike to the ensemble, it’ll surely be a memorable outing for the CBS All Access series.
