Over the past week, Marvel lovers of all kinds have been pouring their hearts onto social media following the death of Stan Lee, who passed away at the grand age of 95 on Monday. The comic book icon touched so many of us that millions are heartbroken at his loss. Just when we needed it, though, Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi has shared the perfect tribute to Lee that’s both poignant and also gives us a chuckle.
Waititi shared a behind the scenes snap of himself alongside Chris Hemsworth and Stan The Man on the set of Ragnarok. It was clearly taken during filming of Lee’s cameo in the Thor threequel, in which he turns up as a Sakaaran hairdresser who cuts off the God of Thunder’s luscious locks with his creepy bionic arm. At first, Thor’s horrified by his new do, but he seems to develop a fondness for it – Captain America even compliments it in Avengers: Infinity War.
The New Zealand director’s caption of the image is what made us giggle, though. He simply wrote: “We Stan a Leegend.” It’s a brilliant pun on the meme, one that Stan – who was always fond of dropping wordplay into his writing – probably would’ve appreciated.
Fans are sure going to miss Lee’s customary cameos in every MCU movie, but at least we have a few more to come. We’ve been told that he definitely already shot his role in Avengers 4, and we’d expect the same to be true of Captain Marvel and Spider-Man: Far From Home as well. However, Marvel president Kevin Feige has refrained from confirming this as he wants to preserve the spontaneity in honor of Stan’s own love of surprising people.
Regardless, this photo shared by Waititi is a great tribute to the legendary Stan Lee and as his legacy continues to live on through his work and the characters he created, you can bet we’ll be seeing a lot more tributes over the coming weeks and months.
