Seeing Arthur Curry in the classic green-and-orange costume may be one of the many fan-pleasing details to come in the new Aquaman movie, but from the perspective of actor Jason Momoa, this outfit has at least one serious drawback.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the star spoke of his experience wearing the familiar armor, and explained one of the biggest challenges that comes with wearing this getup all day.
“It looks like it’s easy to pee in that,” he said, pointing to his costume. “But really it’s not. And if you have the poopsies, it is very challenging. You’ve gotta be really good at holding it.”
Presumably spending so much time on set around water doesn’t help, either.
Momoa’s Amber Heard also recalled some difficulties when it came to her own Atlantean outfit, describing the physical restrictions that the design brings.
“It’s a whole other level of functional art,” she said. “They’re so intricate. You have to move in it, you have to breathe in it, you have to live in it.”
Despite such on-set difficulties, Aquaman looks to be arriving in cinemas next month on a wave of strong buzz. With the movie’s social media embargo recently being lifted, early viewers and critics have painted a picture of what could be the DCEU’s strongest offering to date. In response to this positive reception, box office analysts have adjusted their predictions, with James Wan’s film now said to be headed for an opening weekend haul of at least $100 million.
This news should come as a relief to Warner Bros. after last year’s commercially underwhelming Justice League, and while the disappointing performance of that ensemble actioner called into question the sustainability of the DCEU’s Marvel-aping model, the franchise could well have plenty of life in it yet as a cinematic universe that’s relatively focused on standalone outings.
As much as Momoa complains about his costume, it’s clear that he’d be game for another round in the role, mentioning last month that he’s already started pitching ideas for a sequel. We’ll find out if his suggestions stand a chance of reaching the screen once Aquaman hits theaters on December 21st.
