Late last night, Netflix sent the Marvel fandom into a sad state of despair after they announced via Deadline that Daredevil will not be returning to our screens for a fourth season. It was crushing to hear, especially after the spectacular outing the show just delivered, but the streaming service at least gave us a silver lining of sorts.
In a statement confirming the news, Netflix teased that Matt Murdock still has a future in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, saying:
“While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come, while the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel.”
Now, there are many ways to interpret this, and it’s certainly no guarantee that the fans will be getting the fourth season that they so desperately want. But, it did give many hope that maybe, just maybe, Marvel has plans for the Man Without Fear on the big screen. That’d certainly ease the blow of the cancellation a bit, but it seems that’s simply wishful thinking.
In Deadline’s report, they note that we shouldn’t expect for any kind of Daredevil movie to materialize as such a thing is unlikely right now. That doesn’t mean it won’t ever happen, but for the time being, it seems Mr. Murdock will be staying put on the small screen.
And as for his remaining peers? Well, we know that we’ve got at least one more season from Jessica Jones and The Punisher coming our way, but it definitely feels like we’re in the final days for this particular branch of the Marvel universe and as such, we imagine that both of those aforementioned shows will suffer the same fate as Daredevil, Iron Fist and Luke Cage sooner rather than later.
