Though it’s long been assumed that Jake Gyllenhaal’s character would be Peter Parker’s next major antagonist, actor Tom Holland hinted that the dynamic between this pair won’t be so simple, describing their relationship as “brothers in arms” as the two of them work together to fight some Elementals.

For further details, Gyllenhaal was also on hand to offer his own, longer explanation, suggesting that this unlikely team-up was the making of one Nick Fury:

“There are these threats to the world. Elementals. Elemental creatures. And Mysterio is someone who knows about them, and wants to make sure the world is safe from them. And Nick Fury asks him to come on and help, because he’s the only one who really sort of understands them in a way. And then he teams up with friendly neighborhood Spider-Man, and unfortunately, he has to make him more than just friendly neighborhood Spider-Man.”

Seeing how Peter and Quentin Beck usually aren’t on the friendliest terms in the comic books, it feels like a safe bet that these two won’t stay brothers in arms for long, but until their eventual split, the duo’s contrasting abilities could make for a formidable combination.

As for what Nick Fury’s got to do with all this, there’s been a fair bit of speculation that the Avengers assembler will be popping up along with his colleague Maria Hill as part of a revitalized S.H.I.E.L.D. that’s become newly mobilized after the events of Avengers: Endgame. That remains to be seen, but at the very least, it’s certainly looking like Spidey’s new stealth suit was provided for him as part of his collaboration with Fury and Beck.

We’ll find out if this is one team that Nick Fury regrets putting together when Spider-Man: Far From Home hits theaters on July 5th, 2019.
