Gotham returned for its fifth and final season last week and wasted no time in setting up the heightened stakes for this last run of the Batman prequel series. Following Jeremiah’s attack on the city in the season 4 finale, Gotham’s become a No Man’s Land, quarantined off from the rest of the country and a playground for its overgrown criminal population. Curiously, though, the orchestrator of the chaos himself was nowhere to be seen.
Jeremiah’s definitely returning to Gotham in a big way this season though, as promised by star Cameron Monaghan. The actor who brings the proto-Clown Prince to life shared a creepy photo of his character, half-shrouded in darkness but with his customary grin plastered on his pale face, on his Instagram account recently. He captioned the image: “Just a few more weeks until #Gotham is re-introduced to this creep. Who watched the premier episode?”
So, thanks to Monaghan, we now know not to expect the surviving Valeska twin on the show for another few weeks. But this raises more questions than it answers. For instance, just why is Jeremiah laying low when he’d surely love nothing better than to enjoy the carnage he’s created? Also, what’s his grand plan for Gotham City? Looks like we’ll just have to be patient and wait and see what happens as the next 11 episodes of the shortened fifth season unfold.
As well as Jeremiah’s return, season 5 of Gotham also holds a lot of other treats. The opening scene of the premiere, for instance, teased an unlikely team-up between Gordon, the GCPD and Penguin and Riddler. Furthermore, Bane – or, at least, a version of him – will show up to wreak havoc, and the series finale, which will jump forward by ten years, has been confirmed to feature the one and only Dark Knight. Suffice it to say, there’s much to look forward to for fans, and the return of Jeremiah will just be the cherry on top of it all.
