The new trailer for Spider-Man: Far From Home has given fans a fair amount of footage to process, but a highlight among the various clips from Peter Parker’s trip through Europe is an early look at Jake Gyllenhaal in the role of Quentin Beck, aka Mysterio.
The character arrives in a cloud of green smoke and tells someone who may or may not be Peter that they “don’t want any part of this,” before engaging in battle with a water-based giant whose appearance seems to confirm the old reports of Hydro-Man entering the fray. Oh yeah, and he also wears the famous fishbowl helmet that fans have been longing to see him in for a while now.
When it was first reported that Mysterio was showing up in Far From Home, many assumed that he’d be the main antagonist of the picture, but as Gyllenhaal and Tom Holland revealed last month, the relationship between Quentin and Peter won’t be quite so simple. In the words of Holland, the pair will spend at least part of the movie as “brothers in arms” as they travel across Europe fighting Elementals, which look to include the likes of Hydro-Man and the previously rumored Molten Man. Given Mysterio’s history in the comic books, however, it seems pretty inevitable that he’ll be taking a turn for the villainous somewhere down the line.
Though some fans are already a little nervous about the idea of so many major foes being packed into one picture, we’ll see if Spider-Man: Far From Home can avoid the narrative messiness that this approach brought The Amazing Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man 3 when the film hits theaters on July 5th, 2019. In the meantime, you can expect to see Peter first in Avengers: Endgame, which comes out on April 26th.
