Harley Quinn, Huntress, and Black Canary – three of Gotham’s most famous foes. But together they are more. Together, they are DC’s Birds of Prey.
It’s been a long time coming, but the Powers That Be over at Warner Bros. have finally committed to a female-fronted spinoff, with Margot Robbie’s Crown Princess of Crime anchoring a cast comprised of Mary Elizabeth Winstead (Huntress) and Jurnee Smollett-Bell as Black Canary. Behind the lens is writer-director Cathy Yan, who looks set to deliver a DC movie unlike any other and, frankly, we couldn’t be more excited.
An early 2020 release date is in place, and with Birds of Prey currently filming on the streets of Los Angeles (working title: Fox Force Five), a smattering of set photos have emerged to bring us that little bit closer to Jurnee Smollett-Bell’s Black Canary. Both Atlanta and Savannah have also been earmarked as filming locations for DC’s star-studded spinoff, so it’s unclear exactly where these photos were taken. But that’s beside the point – just look at Smollett-Bell in action!

Previous intel has revealed that Birds of Prey largely revolves around Cassandra Cain (Ella Jay Basco), a young girl left in the clutches of Black Mask (Ewan McGregor), a Gotham City warlord who soon feels the wrath of Harley Quinn and her unlikely allies. Also on board for this one are Chris Messina and Rosie Perez, the latter of whom is attached to the role of Renee Montoya, one of the city’s finest detectives.
DC’s Birds of Prey movie has been slated for release on February 7th, 2020, and will serve as the perfect primer for Wonder Woman 1984, the Patty Jenkins-directed sequel that’s also pegged to arrive in a year’s time.
