But while Ernie Hudson mentioned a couple of weeks ago that nobody has approached him with a contract yet, the actor has since told /Film during a visit to the set of L.A.’s Finest that he’s at least been in contact with director Jason Reitman, as well as his father Ivan.

“I reached out to Jason,” Hudson said. “I’ve talked to Jason. I’ve also had a conversation with Ivan [Reitman] just to congratulate him. They confirmed that the movie is definitely being made, because you know there’s always been rumors with Ghostbusters the last 30 years. What that’ll look like, they did not share.”

The upcoming sequel/reboot will see Jason Reitman follow in the footsteps of his father, who first brought Ghostbusters to the big screen with the 1984 original. And though Hudson has said that he’s yet to find out if there’s a part for him in the new movie, he’s still happy to see the torch pass between generations.

“Nobody’s offered me a job, but the reason I wanted to reach out to Jason, I remember him as a little kid on the set of Ghostbusters,” Hudson said. “The fact that he’s stepping into that, I think the fans have been wanting it so no matter what happens, I know it’s going to be a great movie. I really respect him as a filmmaker. Obviously, I’d love to be a part of it but that hasn’t so far presented itself. I know that the movie will be good.”

Ghostbusters 3 will also see a changing of the guard in front of the cameras, with recent reports indicating that the central team will consist of four kids – two male and two female – in the preteen to early teen age range. The lineup is said to include a young boy with an “unbridled excitement for the unknown” and a girl who has difficulty interpreting and expressing emotions.

At the same time, given that Reitman’s film is continuing in the continuity of the first two movies, it feels almost inevitable that at least some of the first team will be coming back, if only for quick cameos. Though Billy Murray’s thoughts on the project remain mysterious, both Hudson and Dan Aykroyd seem game to return, but either way, we’ll see if Ghostbusters 3 can live up to the original team’s legacy when the film hits theaters on July 10th, 2020.
