Godzilla: King of the Monsters is still a few weeks out from release, but now that the film’s social media embargo has lifted, it looks like Michael Dougherty’s blockbuster will be stomping into cinemas with some strong buzz behind it.
While it’s hard to fault the marketing for the upcoming monster movie – which delivered one of the best trailers of 2018 back in July – early box office projections haven’t been particularly kind to the flick. Long range tracking from BoxOfficePro, for example, had the film headed for a domestic debut in the range of $40-$60 million. Granted, that’s nothing to be sniffed at, but seeing how the feature is expected to be the stepping stone to further crossover projects in the MonsterVerse, the figures still leave plenty to be desired.
It may therefore come as a relief to Legendary Pictures that the film’s Twitter response has been largely glowing, with many viewers praising the work for its scale and spectacle:
#GodzillaMovie is the film I’ve waited years for. The thrilling sequel captures the spirit of Japan’s famous kaiju while setting up his reign for years to come. There are few words which describe the film as well as momentous, and its epic scale will leave audiences of astounded.

Honestly, #GodzillaMovie is (atomically) breathtaking. If you aren’t with the MosterVerse and its kaiju revolution, this film will change your mind.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters rules so goddamn hard. Easily the most fun I’ve had in theaters all year and the best Monsterverse entry yet. The scale is mind-boggling & every action scene could be your new desktop wallpaper. See it on the biggest screen possible. #GodzillaMovie pic.twitter.com/YoZrAAjey1

Am now free to say #GodzillaMovie King of the Monsters is handily the craziest, most entertaining American kaiju movie in existence. But that doesn't do justice to just how wild a ride this is, jumping from the majesty of the monsters to the wackiness of the humans…

#GodzillaKingOfTheMonsters ups the monster action considerably. The battle scenes are gorgeous & fierce & feel ripped from the pages of a gnarly graphic novel. You want a giant-monster movie throwdown, this is it and then some. Can’t wait for that Godzilla vs Kong movie now pic.twitter.com/3RnAOSc00V

Though 2014’s Godzilla certainly has its fans, the movie proved divisive for its surprisingly restrained approach to its kaiju action. Last year, however, King of the Monsters helmsman Michael Dougherty offered his assurance that there’ll be “no holding back” in the upcoming sequel. Sure enough, it seems that this month’s release is even winning over viewers who weren’t entirely sold on the Big-G’s previous Hollywood outing:
Had real issues with #godzilla (2014). The movie was called Godzilla but he was barely in it. Thankfully @Mike_Dougherty's #GodzillaKingOfTheMonsters is awesome. It's everything I wanted last movie to b but wasn't. If u want to see Godzilla fighting other monsters u will b happy. pic.twitter.com/ksswtSey6O

The special effects are bonkers, and I really like how Director Mike Dougherty plays with scale after the criticisms leveled at 2014’s Godzilla. All in all, the type of monster-vs-monster brawler you’d hope for a movie called “King of the Monsters” and a poster like this: pic.twitter.com/6FFwwMmfCK

#GodzillaKingOfTheMonsters is the modern day Godzilla movie you’ve been waiting for. It’s everything the 2014 Godzilla isn’t, while still retaining the best elements of that film and elevating them x 100. Monstrous action that rattles the theater. So damn good. @GodzillaMovie pic.twitter.com/claFZH3oq1

Needless to say, this all bodes very well for the film’s release, but you can decide for yourself if Godzilla: King of the Monsters is worth all the praise when it arrives in theaters on May 31st. After that, the atomic-breathed lizard faces his most famous opponent yet when Godzilla vs. Kong comes out on March 13th, 2020.
