Following Avengers: Endgame, the makers of the movie have been dropping revelations that alter our understanding of the MCU to date. For instance, the Russos claimed Steve Rogers knew he could lift Mjolnir back in Avengers: Age of Ultron but he chose not to. Speaking of Captain America, writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have likewise suggested a pretty big retcon of the franchise.
As we all know, Endgame concludes with Steve going back into the past and living out a happy life married to Peggy Carter. It’s Markus and McFeely’s interpretation that Rogers remains in the original timeline and that this Old Man Cap has always been there in the MCU, just retired and keeping to himself. This includes raising a couple of kids with his wife.
Some fans are skeptical about the writers’ explanation for Cap’s time travel, but it’s an established fact that Peggy had children. In a 2016 episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., titled “Emancipation,” Phil Coulson reads Peggy’s obituary in the paper – she previously died in Captain America: Civil War. If you look at the screenshot below, you’ll see that it says she had two children and according to Markus and McFeely, these would be the kids she had with Steve.
The curious thing about the debate around Cap’s life with Peggy is that the Russos have a completely different interpretation than the writers. The directors claim that Steve created a new timeline when he went back in time and would’ve had to jump back over to the main timeline as an old man to hand the shield over to Sam Wilson.
So, if this is the case, the children mentioned in Peggy’s obituary were with another man, the one Cap was said to have saved during the war in Captain America: The Winter Soldier. Of course, if Markus and McFeely are to be believed, this was a lie and Steve was her husband all along.
Seeing as those who worked on Avengers: Endgame can’t agree on one explanation, that means Marvel fans are free to make up their own minds about what happened to Captain America after he went back in time. So on that note, tell us, what do you think really went down when Steve travelled back to the past? As always, let us know by dropping a comment down below.
