For anyone who gushed in awe as the God of Thunder made his arrival in Wakanda during last year’s Infinity War, seeing Thor in Avengers: Endgame was quite the surprise. In fact, his new “style,” with its long hairdo, matching beard, and big beer belly, is probably one of the most heated debates to come out of the blockbuster.
However, in an interview on Sirius XM (via Express), the Russo Brothers talked about how actor Chris Hemsworth was totally on board with the change, and also what makes this Thor more special in their eyes than the others.
“Joe and I love subversion and to take the God who looks like a God and find a way to subvert that and re-invent the character,” said Anthony. “We find ‘fat Thor’ as inspiring as any version of Thor because he’s so relatable…. It’s a very human version of the character.”
Human is a good word for it. Combining the comedic and dramatic elements his character manifested in Thor: Ragnarok, this God of Thunder doesn’t act like, say, Hercules would for most of Endgame.
Throughout the film, he’s totally unsure of himself; he drinks; he mopes; and he cries to his mother (I don’t mean to bag that scene – I found it to be one of the movie’s best uses of time travel). But by the time the cataclysmic battle is upon him and the rest of the Avengers, he shows us that underneath all that fattiness, he’s still Thor. And watching him wield Mjolnir once again makes the pitched, but deleted Thor vs. Thor scene all the more tempting.
While Hemsworth and Thor are confirmed to return to the MCU, we don’t know what’s next for the prince of Asgard. He left Avengers: Endgame hoping to figure out his true purpose in life, and perhaps he’ll get that chance as a part of the next Guardians of the Galaxy movie.
