Sylvester Stallone Says Rambo V: Last Blood Will Be An Entirely Different Beast

It may be full of violence and bloody action, but Stallone has gone on record to say that Rambo V: Last Blood is different from the series' other films.

It’s been a bit of a wild ride for Stallone fans as of late. Yesterday, the Italian Stallion himself shared a behind-the-scenes glimpse at Rambo V: Last Blood, in an Instagram post that featured a look at the movie’s set and one brutal action set piece. Earlier this month, meanwhile, Sylvester jetted off to France to attend the 72nd Annual Cannes Film Festival, and during his time in the coastal Parisian town, he attended a special event to commemorate his long, prolific career in Hollywood. Those in attendance were treated to a handful of promotional stills and an unreleased trailer for Rambo V, which made its way onto the internet this past week.

Moviegoers can expect plenty of blood and gore once the film actually hits the big screen, though in a bit of a surprise, Stallone shared some details on the plot, and it looks like it won’t be your standard action flick. As reported by Revenge of the Fans, it seems Rambo V will be different from any of the films that came before it. As Sylvester explains, Last Blood touches on what happens when a soldier comes home, and how one can feel out of place once they’ve left the battlefield.

“In every film, Rambo never goes home, he goes out to the the jungle or Afghanistan. In the new one, he does come home, but in a way he never arrives. He’s there, but he’s not. That’s what the whole story is built around. As soon as he walks outside his door, he has no more control. The world controls you.”

PTSD is no stranger to Hollywood, and while it’s been covered in plenty of other movies, it looks like Rambo’s next chapter explores it in more detail. Stallone also shed a bit of light on the plot. Up until now, fans have had to rely on a rather non-descript synopsis, which explains that things will go south of the border as John tries to track down a girl who’s been kidnapped by the Mexican cartel. But here’s what the actor had to share:

“We pick it up, he’s out in this storm, a horrible storm. He’s trying to rescue people. There’s a flash flood. One guy goes up by horseback, he volunteers to save people. He’s still dealing with survivor guilt, b/c he could save his friends in Vietnam. A result of PTSD. He has a hard time. He has a beautiful ranch, but he lives underground. This is how he deals with his dilemma. There’s something subterranean in Vietnam. He has an adopted family there. His father has passed on. The housekeeper who is 70 has a granddaughter. He’s her surrogate father.”

The girl finds her real father in Mexico and heads there. “Bad things happen,” says Stallone, “There’s going to be some serious vengeance in this movie. A lot of people getting hurt.”

It might be too soon to tell, but it looks like Rambo V: Last Blood will offer fans plenty to chew on, from more thought-provoking moments to brutal action sequences. Thankfully, we won’t have to wait too long to find out for ourselves if it delivers, as the movie is set to hit theaters on September 20th.
