The Haunting of Hill House proved to be one of the best Netflix originals of 2018. Appropriately released around Halloween, the show followed the Crain family and their doomed relationship with the titular house. I have to admit, it managed to scare the absolute crap out of me on several occasions, with one specific moment in episode 5 causing me to scream so loud my friends came to check if I was alright. Without giving away too much about the show’s ending, it wrapped up neatly and satisfyingly – which is why it makes sense for the upcoming second season to tell a separate story via The Haunting of Bly Manor.
Everything we’ve heard so far indicated that the next run will tell a completely different tale with a new cast, sharing only some themes and a very spooky atmosphere. But now, Carla Gugino, who plays Olivia Crain, the mother of the family, has hinted that there might be room for her character to return.
During an interview with The Wrap, she mentioned that she’s been in discussions with series creator Mike Flanagan about her character coming back.
“Well, I can’t say anything definitive at this point, other than Mike and I really love collaborating and working together and any opportunity where a schedule allows for us to do that, we will, and I would be honored to. So we’re talking a lot about it and we’ll just see if all schedules allow.”
However The Haunting of Bly Manor turns out, you can guarantee it’s going to provide some top class scares. This season adapts Henry James’ 1898 novella The Turn of the Screw, which follows a governess looking after two children on a remote estate. After experiencing ghostly phenomenon, she becomes convinced that the grounds are haunted.
Presumably, Flanagan’s adaptation will, like The Haunting of Hill House, modernize the story. Where Carla Gugino’s character fits into it though is anyone’s guess.
