With summer on the horizon, it seems fans are shifting attention away from movies like Avengers: Endgame and Shazam!, and are instead looking to see what future superhero flicks bring to the table. While the DC Extended Universe might be done for the year – their next project, Birds of Prey, isn’t due out till 2020 – Marvel still has one more on the docket. In just a few short weeks, Spider-Man: Far From Home hits the big screen, and some newly released box office projections seem to indicate that it will have no problem when it comes to generating ticket sales.
As we previously reported, initial reports pegged a $120 million opening for the latest MCU film, which didn’t seem out of line considering that Far From Home is scheduled to release the Tuesday before the 4th of July long weekend. However, as recently noted by The Hollywood Reporter, new estimates are predicting a much higher gross of $150 to $160 million during its initial six-day run, with some industry experts speculating that the total could reach as high as $180 million.
This puts it ahead of 2017’s Homecoming, which raked in $117 million over its three-day opening, and eventually went on to earn $880 million around the world. We certainly wouldn’t be surprised if Far From Home eclipses its predecessor at the box office, though we don’t expect it to come close to reaching the records set by Avengers: Endgame.
So far, the Russo brothers’ blockbuster has brought in over $2.732 billion and is less than $60 million away from dethroning James Cameron’s Avatar as the highest-grossing movie of all time. Still, we’re certain the hype and excitement surrounding Endgame will spill over onto Spider-Man: Far From Home, and we’ll be sure to keep you updated on its box office performance as the numbers come in.
