Months after the release of Avengers: Endgame, many MCU fans are still trying to piece together what exactly happened to Steve Rogers in the time between his journey into the past and his reappearance as an old man. Should Marvel Studios ever choose to give the First Avenger another big screen outing, they’d have several decades’ worth of unexplored timeline to work with. But until then, the internet is free to fill in the blanks with their own speculation and fan fiction.
Enter this new theory, which suggests that the older version of Steve may have attended the funeral of Peggy Carter in Captain America: Civil War. The main basis for this speculation is a shot of the casket being carried down the aisle. On the bottom left, you can see a gray-haired man that some fans have likened to Cap himself in his twilight years.
Needless to say, the back of someone’s head is hardly a sturdy basis for any theory. What’s more, it’s debatable that Steve attending Peggy’s funeral in the main timeline even makes sense, given the rules of time travel laid out in in Avengers: Endgame. But while the writers of Civil War and the Avengers: Infinity War sequel almost certainly didn’t have such an Easter Egg in mind, feel free to accept this idea as headcanon if it tugs at your heartstrings enough.
In any case, though we probably shouldn’t expect another Steve Rogers solo outing anytime soon, the Russo Brothers have at least acknowledged that there might be more of the character’s story to tell somewhere down the line. In the meantime, we’ll be seeing a new Captain America in action when the Falcon and Winter Soldier TV show comes to Disney Plus next year.
