Good Omens has been a huge hit for Amazon Prime. Much like Netflix, the streaming service doesn’t typically reveal viewing figures, but the mammoth publicity push before its release and the passionate fanbase it’s developed online since are a good indicator that the series has done exceedingly well. It’s no surprise, then, that Amazon are hoping that showrunner Neil Gaiman will make more for them.
The company’s TV co-head Vernon Sanders touched on the subject of furthering Good Omens during Saturday’s TCA executive session and proclaimed that Amazon has an “ongoing relationship” with Gaiman and that “the notion” of a second season has definitely come up. However, Sanders is aware that it may take “a little time” for something to happen.
“We’re lucky to have an ongoing relationship with Neil. We’re so excited about how Season 1 has done for us. The notion has come up about whether we can revisit that world. It’s in Neil’s hands now but we’d love to do it. We’re finding that it just takes a little time, perhaps, in the case of Neil. But whatever he wants to do, we’re interested in.”
Sanders’ comments are more optimistic than Gaiman’s own on the same topic. The writer has been open with fans on social media that he made Good Omens as a personal labor of love to honor his late friend Sir Terry Pratchett, with whom he penned the original novel of the same name back in 1990. As an author by trade, Gaiman found the huge commitments of being a showrunner pretty taxing, so he’s maintained that he’s not looking to hop back into the saddle and make more just yet.
It’s interesting to note, then, that he’s left the option open for a Good Omens return with Amazon. Star Michael Sheen – who played angel Aziraphale opposite David Tennant’s Crowley the demon – should be pleased, too, as he’s previously voiced an interest in coming back to avert the apocalypse again. Not to mention that season 1 did suggest what storyline a follow-up run could tackle, too.
