Grant Gustin Reveals How The Flash Sets Up Crisis On Infinite Earths

Even though the "Crisis on Infinite Earths" crossover will encompass the Arrowverse as a whole, we've been more so associating it with Arrow alone because that particular show's eighth and final season will essentially serve as a prelude to the event. As such, all eyes will be on Oliver Queen as we march toward the cataclysmic epic.

Still, we shouldn’t forget about The Flash because, after all, it was the show that first introduced the “Crisis” concept to DC TV in its pilot episode. Since then, we’ve been teased with various other breadcrumbs, but the main course is soon to arrive.

As you may have heard, the actor tasked with playing the Monitor, LaMonica Garrett, was on set during filming for the season 6 premiere. Well, according to Grant Gustin, said guest appearance factors into the kickoff episode in a huge way, as he told ComicBook.com the following at San Diego Comic-Con:

“I can’t spoil too too much because I haven’t read it yet. I’ve been teased a lot from our guys what it’s going to be. The Monitor shows up at the end of our first episode and says the universe is in jeopardy and in order to save the universe, Barry Allen has to die. And Barry Allen doesn’t know about this deal Oliver made with the Monitor, either, so someone’s gonna die.”

Knowing how “Crisis on Infinite Earths” will have a winter cliffhanger of sorts and’ll be broadcast across two quarters, we could actually see Barry Allen die in a fashion similar to his comic book counterpart this December in order to entice us for January’s final act. If so, his demise will probably prove temporary because the Scarlet Speedster has to fill out the rest of his sixth season.

Actually, Supergirl also bit the dust in Marv Wolfman and George Perez’s classic on which the prime time event is based, yet it’s worth pointing out that she, too, has commitments beyond January. Arrow, meanwhile, takes its final bow that month, so odds are Oliver is going to make the ultimate sacrifice in order to save his friends and reality itself.

The Flash returns with new episodes on Tuesday, October 8th on The CW. In the meantime, check out our review for season 5’s Blu-ray set.
